Guru Josh is Paul Walden; a pioneering and iconic figure in the dance music industry. Primarily as a musician but also as a promoter, artist, designer and entrepreneur, Paul Walden has been involved in the music business since the early 1980s.
Starting out as a promoter on his home island of Jersey, Paul subsequently spent time in the U.S. running a string of successful businesses before returning to London to concentrate on his music career. After setting up 'Joshua Cries Wolf' - a rock band which won the 'Nescafe British Band Contest' - Paul discovered the rave scene. He soon fully integrated himself in the scene and, after performing with the like of Adamski and Seal, was soon touring as Guru Josh.
After performing at the likes of Sunrise, World Party and Biology, the promoter of called a rave 'Infinity' financed the cutting of a promotional white label. A slow burner on its first pressing, 'Infinity' was initially supported by Mike Pickering; it became a Hacienda anthem before being signed to Deconstruction, selling 3,000,000 copies on its totemic rise to being one of the most recognised dance anthems of all time. For the next 3 years Guru Josh toured as the biggest dance star on the planet. His records charted all over world. His follow up singles included 'Freaky Dreamer', 'Holographic Dreams' and 'Whose Law (Is It Anyway?)' and his debut album ('Infinity') sold in excess of 900,000 copies.
In between touring Europe in a camouflage campervan, promoting events in Portugal and launching a number of diverse, alternative and ultimately very successful business ventures, Guru Josh has been performing regularly at events such as Manumission and clubs like El Divino and Es Paradis (Ibiza) to his devoted fan base. However, it is work with The Guru Josh Project that has raised his current profile to new levels. Signed to Big City Beats in 2007 and consisting of Guru Josh, Snakebyte and Darren Bailie, The Guru Josh Project is currently riding a wave of success with the re-released 'Infinity 2008'. Experiencing widespread success and topping the sales charts throughout Belgium, France, Holland and Denmark, 'Infinity 2008' was the major crossover dance hit of 2008 which has surpassed many of the achievements set by the original release in 1989. It is one of the most viewed You Tube videos (52,000,000 views) and in terms of both sales and radio airplay was amongst the biggest records across the world in 2008. The success looks also set to continue throughout 2009 as 'Infinity 2008', now licensed to Ultra, has recently hit #1 on the 'Billboard Hot Dance Airplay Chart' and new material is also forthcoming.
As a live show The Guru Josh Project is booked solid until 2010 and will be performing to huge audiences across all continents. After performing to 600,000 as part of the NYE celebrations at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, they are embarking on a festival tour throughout summer 2009 and are set to have yet another incredible year.
